61 | See pictures on web of Nicolas Rivard's hometown of St Auben de Tourouvre in France. Canadian gov't gave placque to town and added stainglass window to church. (28 Oct 208) url: geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/1865/window2.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/robertyandow/ps03/ps03_208.html Name Nicolas RIVARD Birth 16 Jun 1617, Tourouvre, Perche, France Death 1 Jul 1701, Batiscan, Quebec, Canada Age: 84 Father Nicolas Pierre RIVARD (1590-) Mother Jeanne MULLARD (1597-) Son of a prosperous merchant. On 6 Mar 1648 signed contract to emigrate & work in New France. In 1651 was named Captain of the Militia in Cap De la Madeleine. Settled on land granted to him by the Jesuits in Batiscan. Had 10 children, 5 sons, 8 matured and married. From Laforest's, "Our French-Canadian Ancestors", Chapter 20, page 215 to 221, entitled Nicolas Rivard, Sieur De la Vigne. "It was on a Friday, 6 March 1648 when Nicolas knocked on the Door of notary Chouaiseau in Tourouvre. He was there to sign a contract to work in Canada. He had been recruited by Pierre Juchereau, Sieur Des Moulineaux, on behalf of his brother Noel Juchereau Sieur Des Chastellees, living in Quebec, "for a time of three years to begin the Day of embarkation which will be this year from la Rochelle". Rivard was promised free passage to and from Canada, including meals and 66 livres "tournois" as an anual wage. He was also advanced 15 livres, Deducted from his first years pay. A normal livre was worth 25% less than a livre tournois at the time. As early as 27 February 1649, Nicolas appeared as a Godfather in the parish registry of Trois-Rivieres. In 1651, he was named Captain of the Militia in Cap-de-la-Madeleine and later in Batiscan. "This was an honorary position and held without monetary compensation. The captain of the militia was, in fact the administrator of the seigeury. He trained the troops, led them into battle, carried out the orders of the Interdant, and was also the governor's agent. When thw seigneur lived outside the seigneury, the captain had the first pew in church, on the left side of the main isle. He was usually referred to as "Sieur" and most often, at his Demise, he was buried in the crypt of the church." He worked at his Duty until old age overtook him. On June 6, 1649, he received a land grant from the Jesuits, measuring two arpents in frontage on the river by twenty arpents in Depth. The Date of marriage of Nicolas Rivard is not exactly known. Some genealogists say the ceremony took place on 25 November 1652, others opt for 21 June 1653. Whichever it is, we Do know that on 25 November 1652, Nicolas and his brother-in-law Pierre Guillet Dit Lajeunesse took part in a sale to Gilles Trottier, of lands belonging to the late Mathurin Guillet and his wife, Catherine de Sainte-Pere. Mathurin was the brother of Pierre and had been killed by the Iroquois during a sortie organized by the governor, in August 1652. Later, Nicolas Rivard, baptised on 10 June 1617 at Saint-Antoine De Tourouvre, son of Pierre Rivard and of Jeanne Mullard, was married to Catherine De Sainte-Pere. She was baptised on 26 August 1634, at Saint-Jean D'Angely De Tourouvre, and was widow of Mathurin Guillet. Nicolas was 35 and Catherine 18. Their first child was born on 1 February 1654, a son named Nicolas like his father. On March 7, 1661, notary Claude Herlin drew up a most unusual contract. It concerned the purchase of a chapel by the literate and well respected Nicolas Rivard from Governor Pierre Boucher. The deed read in part "A chapel which he (Boucher) had built in his yard, 20 feet wide, would be disassenbled piece by piece, transported to the Cap and reassembled. It was erected on the precise spot where the second church, which still exists, is located. Research Information from Dr.A.E.Edwards. 92 | Tanguay, vol 1, p291 lists Pierre Guillet (I) as marrying "Jeanne DeLaunay de St. Per". Jette, Loiselle & Drouin all list Jeanne St. Per as Pierre's wife but Jette, p. 543, lists two marriages. First to Jeanne St. Per of Cap-de- Madeleine iin 1648 in Trois Rivieres from whom all children are born. Second, to Madeleine DeLaunay of St. Vincent in 1670 after who's name is written "sans posterite." Loiselle does not mention a first marriage but shows a 1670 marriage to M. Mad. DeLaunay while Drouin data shows "veuf" after Pierre name in place of parents but does not list any earlier marriage in either volume of the two microfiche. | GUILLET, Pierre (I485)

96 | website (302148 hrs Oct 2008) http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/1781/France/Normandy/Ige/ige.ht ml Cliff Normand, who has conducted extensive research on the Normand family, sent us this about the families who left Ige, Normandy, France for the New World: The book "nos Origines en France, des D?buts ? 1825, Volume7, Normandie et Perche" lists the people from Ige (and other areas), apparently taken from Jette's book. The people from Ige in Quebec include: Julien and Pierre TROTTIER Jacques BEAUVAIS, dit St. Jemme, born 1623 Ige, died 1691 Montreal Marie BELHOMME Catherine (d) and Sebastien (f) DODIERPierre and Roberte GADOIS Pierre, Louis (f) and Louise (d) GAGNE Francois, Francoise, Nicolas, and Mathurine, children of Nicolas GOODE and Francoise GADOISE loi JARRY dit Lahaye Jean LEDUC Simon LEREAU Gervais and Jean NORMAND Jean (m. Jacquette VIVRAN) and Gervais were half-brothers, not brothers as most books indicate. This is based on the baptism and marriage documentation that Ted Normand obtained. Gervais' mother was Radegonde GADOYS. Thus far I have not found anything to tie Pierre GADOIS to Gervais except their name. I have not located any Quebec records where they are recorded at the same event. Obviously, they were probably related. Another reference from the mortality records of St. Martin in Ige: Francoise GADOUAS and her sons died 24 June 1632 of the plague. Maybe the plague is what caused some of the people to leave France. Rev. Rene Detoc, pastor of the church at IGE, France, visited with us in June, 1999, and gave us a tour of the church. He explained that a Siegnor, a landed noble, including the family Bouchard, had recruited families from Ige to go to Canada to work on their plantation. Father DeToc said that they only recruited families of good morals and of high work ethics. Two placues hang on the wall above the baptism font in the Ige church. One names several pioneers to Canada, including Jean LeNormand. The other was left by the Normand family association of Quebec and names Jean Normand as their ancestors as having come from Ige. About 15 descendants of the Normand family were with us when we visited IGE, part of a tour of French Cities of origins of Avoyelles ancestors. | TROTTIER, Julien (I876)
